2012 NWSES Registration is Open

Welcome back everyone! Click on the frog in the upper right corner to get started.

Next year the Intel Northwest Science Expo will be Friday, March 23rd. This is the day before Spring Break for most Oregon educational institutions. Set-up for middle school projects will be Thursday, March 22nd. We know the timing may limit the ability of some students to participate. Please make sure that students are able to attend before adding them online. Registration will close February 22nd. Tentative dates for Regional Fairs have been updated, though individual fair pages may not be current.

Oregon Students Return Triumphant From International Science and Engineering Fair

Of the 25 projects selected to represent Oregon at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair this year, 14 projects presented by 17 students and representing 10 different Oregon schools, won a cumulative total of $56,400 in prize and scholarship money and three trips.
Merlo Station High School students Demitri Hopkins, 18, Forrest Betton, 18 and Eric Thomas, 18, won Best in Category with their Electrical and Mechanical Engineering project titled "Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion Using an Electrostatic Focusing Lens". The boys received previous media attention when they were selected to present their project featuring an original fusion reactor design to President Barack Obama in February when he visited the Intel Ronler Acres campus in Hillsboro. The boys' school along with the fair at which they qualified to attend Intel ISEF, the Intel Northwest Science Expo, will each receive a $1000 grant as part of the award, in addition to the $8000 in prize money the boys will split.

Team Oregon in the Press

There's an Oregon Live article listing the Intel NWSE best of fair winners and all the members of Team Oregon by regional fair. Check it out.

If you scroll down the article you'll notice that one of the project titles is a link. Seems that the team of Forrest Betton, Eric Thomas and Demitri Hopkins from Merlo Station High School got to chat with President Obama while he was in town and share their project with him.

Media Bonus: Here's President Obama's weekly address about his visit to Intel, with some other familiar faces at about the 3:21 marker.
