Intel NWSE Fair Day Info

Project set-up will be both Thursday evening April 12th and Friday morning April 13th

For Middle school project set-up the student does not need to be present; a parent or teacher may complete the set-up for them. All project forms must be brought for set-up. 

For High school student set-up the student must be present to complete display and safety check. All of the project's ISEF forms are required for set-up.

Students are required to attend the Awards Ceremony; students not attending the Awards Ceremony forfeit any awards they might have won.

You can get driving directions to the Portland State Campus Parking Structure 3 from Google maps. We have a map with locations of local fast food establishments and important places near PSU. New resturants seem to open daily.

Schedules for 2018 are being reworked to accommodate both middle and high school students.

2018 Intel NWSE Middle School Student Schedule

All events take place at Portland State University in the Viking Pavilion. For safety and security reasons, students are required to wear name tags at all Intel NWSE events.

 

Thursday April 12, 2018

5:00 -8:00pm:Exhibit setup and Safety Check at PSU. All Posters must be set-up during this time and all forms need to be present. The student does NOT need to be present. Safety Checkers will assist in set-up and approve displays. After an exhibit is approved, it will receive a Safety Check approved sticker to place on the exhibit placard. Please leave the exhibit hall when finished with Safety Check. 
 

Friday April 13, 2018

7:00 - 9:00am: Set-up continues, see above description. 

9:00 -10:30am: Free time.  Nametags will be at student exhibits. 

10:30 - Noon: Judging Session A New this year, middle school students will be assigned to either session A or B. Students interviewed by judges at their exhibits. No food or sound-producing electronics, including cell phones, may be used during judging. Bottled water will be allowed for student consumption. No Parents or Adult Sponsors are allowed in the exhibit hall during judging. We recommend bringing a book to read between judge interviews.

Noon - 1:00pm: Lunch break

1:00-2:30pm: Judging Session B See above description. Free time for middle school students from Session A. 

2:30 - 4:30pm: Middle School & High School Exhibits open to the public. Students should be at their projects for half the time. 

4:30 - 5:30pm: Middle School Special Award Ceremony in Exhibit Hall, students will sit at their projects. Adults in the bleachers.

5:30pm: Removal of posters.

Thursday April 12, 2018

5:00-8:00pm: High School students check in at registration table. Each student will receive a map. Exhibit setup and Safety Check take place in the main gym of the Viking Pavilion. Students set up their displays and must remain there until passed by the safety check team. Students with APPROVED paperwork will receive a sticker showing they have passed safety check. If paperwork is not APPROVED, the student has to provide corrected copies of forms for the SRC table to get a sticker. Students leave the exhibit area when they have completed the Safety Check. High School students, not adults, are required to be present for Safety Check. Nametags should be left at the exhibit for use on Friday.

Volunteering Opportunity:High School Students may sign up to assist with middle school safety checks. Contact Stephanie for information. Also after completing set-up select the middle school projects you will interview the next day.

Friday April 13, 2018

7:00 - 9:00am: Exhibit Set-up, see above desctiption.

9:00 - 10:30am: Judges view exhibits without students present. High School students can use this time to read the posters for conducting middle school interviews.

10:30 - Noon: Students interviewed by judges at their exhibits. Students must be in the exhibit hall during the whole time for judging. No sound-producing electronics, including cell phones, are allowed during judging. No Parents or Adult Sponsors are allowed in the exhibit hall during judging. Between your interviews, interview your assigned middle school projects.

Noon - 1:00pm: Lunch break for students. See the online map of nearby restaurants for options.

1:00 - 2:30pm: Second round of interviews, categories with small numbers of projects may be visited by judges from other categories. For large categoies this is a continuation of the earlier judge session. Students are encouraged to talk to other students about their projects during this time. Complete middle school interviews and turn in sheet with your top choice for a category award.

2:30 - 4:30pm: Exhibits open to the public. Students are required to be at their projects half the time.  The rest of the time can be used to view other projects.

3:20pm: Announcement of HS "Best of Fair" candidates. Most award decisions are made before finalist judging; more than 200 awards will be given at the award ceremony. Announced students will move with their posters to classroom for interviews.

3:30 - 5:00pm: Best of Fair candidates interviewed

4:30 - 5:30pm: Middle School Award Ceremony. High School Students may remove exhibits after it ends. 

6:30 - 8:00pm: Award Ceremony in Exhibit Hall. Students must be present to receive awards.

8:00 - 8:30pm: Team Oregon information meeting for all Intel ISEF finalists.

High School Schedule For Category And Finalist Judges

Judging occurs in the Viking Pavilion on the PSU Campus on Friday April 13th. For security reasons, judges are required to wear name tags through all judging events at the Intel NWSE.

Judge orientation. Finalist judges are selected.

Decision Deadline. Latest time to turn in Category Award Summary to Judge Coordinator for review. Head Judge takes summary to data entry. Judges need to stay until their results have been certified and the Head Judge dismisses them.

Interviews for Best of Fair and ISEF.

Best of Fair and ISEF judges make their decisions.

Poster viewing. Special Award judging begins.

Session A Student interviews. Only half the middle school students will be present.

Session B Student interviews. The second half of projects will be present.

2:30 - 3:15 PM

Deliberations. Each category may make 1 Best of Fair nomination (due 3:15pm). One judge from each nominating category stays for advocacy style Best of Fair judging. Comment Sheets completed.

Decision Deadline for Category and Special Awards.

Best of Fair discussion in exhibit halls during public viewing or posters removed to classroom.
